Looking for After School Activities in New Castle? Here’s Why Music Is Different

If you're searching for after school activities in New Castle, Indiana, there are plenty of options.

Sports.

Clubs.

Dance.

Theater.

Martial arts.

And, of course, music lessons.

We're obviously a little biased at New Castle Music Garage, but we think there's something unique about putting an instrument in a kid's hands.

Not because every child needs to become a professional musician.

Most won't.

But because music gives kids a place to create, build confidence, make mistakes, express themselves and develop something that can stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Not Every Kid Is Looking for Another Sport

Sports can be incredible for kids.

But not every kid connects with them.

Some kids haven't found the thing that makes them light up yet.

Maybe they're creative.

Maybe they're quiet.

Maybe they're the kid constantly wearing headphones.

Maybe they're tapping rhythms on their desk.

Maybe they know every lyric to every song in the car.

Maybe they've been asking for a guitar.

Sometimes the kid who hasn't found their place simply hasn't been introduced to their thing yet.

Music might be it.

Music Gives Kids Something That's Theirs

School comes with expectations.

Sports come with expectations.

Life comes with expectations.

Music can become something different.

A song they chose.

An instrument they wanted.

A sound they created.

A skill they're developing because they actually care about it.

At New Castle Music Garage, we believe the student's goals drive the bus.

That means we aren't trying to turn every student into the same musician.

One kid might want to play guitar in a band.

Another wants to sing.

Another wants to play piano.

Another wants to make beats and produce music.

Another just wants to learn the song they've had on repeat for the last three weeks.

Those are all legitimate reasons to learn music.

Music Can Build Confidence Without Demanding Confidence First

Sometimes parents tell us:

“My kid needs more confidence.”

Music can help.

But we don't believe confidence starts by throwing someone onto a stage and telling them to be brave.

It grows through small wins.

Playing the first chord.

Learning the first beat.

Singing in front of an instructor.

Playing through an entire song.

Trying something difficult.

Making a mistake and realizing nothing terrible happened.

Then trying again.

Eventually the student begins realizing:

“I can do hard things.”

That confidence doesn't have to stay inside the music room.

Music Gives Kids a Place to Fail Forward

Kids spend a lot of their lives being measured.

Grades.

Scores.

Tests.

Wins.

Losses.

Right answers.

Wrong answers.

Music certainly has right notes and wrong notes.

But mistakes are also part of the process.

You will miss the chord.

You will forget the lyric.

You will drop the drumstick.

You will play the wrong note.

Good.

Now we have something to learn from.

At Music Garage, we want students learning how to fail forward.

Try.

Miss.

Adjust.

Try again.

That's how musicians grow.

It's also a pretty useful skill outside of music.

Music Is Creative

A student doesn't have to spend their entire musical life recreating something somebody else made.

Eventually they can create too.

Write a song.

Build a drum groove.

Create a melody.

Improvise a guitar solo.

Make a beat.

Change an arrangement.

Start a band.

Record something.

Music gives kids an opportunity to move from consuming creativity to actually participating in it.

That's an important distinction.

The question changes from:

“What do I want to watch?”

to:

“What do I want to make?”

Music Can Become Social

Private lessons may begin one on one, but music doesn't have to stay there.

Music is incredibly social.

Playing with other musicians teaches students how to listen.

Communicate.

Lead.

Follow.

Make space for someone else.

Recover when something goes wrong.

Work toward something together.

And create something that none of them could have made exactly the same way alone.

For students who want those experiences, playing with other musicians and performing can become an incredible next step.

Not every student has to perform.

Their goals still drive the bus.

But the opportunity is there when they're ready for it.

Music Doesn't Have a Season

One of the cool things about learning an instrument is that the skill doesn't disappear when a season ends.

There isn't a final year of eligibility for guitar.

Nobody ages out of piano.

You can sing at 12.

Play drums at 25.

Pick guitar back up at 43.

Sit at a piano at 70.

The relationship can change throughout someone's life, but music can stay.

That's one of the things we love about teaching it.

We're not just trying to give students something to do after school this semester.

We're introducing them to something they could still be doing decades from now.

What If My Kid Doesn't Practice?

This is usually where parents start wondering whether music lessons are going to become another thing they have to manage.

Our philosophy is pretty simple:

We ask. We don't command.

Especially in the beginning, two or three minutes of playing at home can be a great place to start.

And some of the best practice a young student gets may happen right inside their lesson with their instructor.

We're not interested in creating another nightly argument.

We want students to develop ownership.

As their goals grow, their practice can grow too.

What Can Kids Learn at New Castle Music Garage?

Depending on instructor availability, students can explore areas like:

Guitar.

Piano.

Drums.

Voice.

Bass.

Ukulele.

Songwriting.

Music production.

And more.

But we're not simply teaching someone where to put their fingers.

We want them learning music.

Rhythm.

Listening.

Technique.

Theory.

Creativity.

Playing with others.

Performance.

And how all of those pieces connect.

We teach music, not just songs.

What If My Kid Has Never Played Anything?

Perfect.

Beginners belong here.

They don't need to read music.

They don't need to know scales.

They don't need to understand theory.

They don't even need to know exactly which musical direction they want to go yet.

They can start by being curious.

We'll take it from there.

Healthy Humans Make Healthy Musicians

Music can teach kids some incredible things.

But there's something we care about more than producing incredible musicians.

Producing healthy humans.

One of our foundational beliefs at Music Garage is:

Healthy humans make healthy musicians.

We want every student walking into New Castle Music Garage to know they are:

Loved.

Valued.

Cared For.

Not because they practiced.

Not because they performed.

Not because they were the best student in the room.

Because they matter.

From that foundation, we can challenge them to grow.
