Guitar Lessons in Cicero, IN: What Parents Should Know Before Signing Up

“My kid wants to play guitar. Now what?”

Usually the next move is to start shopping for a guitar. Before you do that, I’d ask one more question: What made them want to play?

Was it a song they heard in the car? Someone they saw onstage? A friend who plays? That answer matters. It gives us a place to start that means something to them.

At Cicero Music Garage, we believe a student’s goals should drive the bus. Our job is to meet them where they are and help them move forward.

Do they need a guitar before the first lesson?

It helps to have an instrument they can play between lessons, but you do not need to guess your way through an expensive purchase.

The right guitar needs to fit the student. Size matters. Comfort matters. And the music they want to play matters too. If your kid is excited about electric guitar, they do not have to “earn” it by starting on acoustic.

Talk with us before you buy. We can help you think through what makes sense for your student and your budget.

What happens in a beginner guitar lesson?

First, we get to know the person holding the guitar.

How was their week? What are they listening to? What are they excited about? If they practiced, what felt good and what felt hard?

Then we make music together. A beginner might start with a simple riff, a rhythm, a few chords, or a piece of a song they love. We review what they have learned, work through the tricky part, and give them a chance to repeat it until they can hear the difference.

Sometimes that means slowing it way down. Sometimes it means playing along with a beat. Sometimes it sounds a little rough before it sounds good. Around here, we call that SLOW + UGLY = AWESOME.

We want students to leave knowing what they did well and exactly what to try at home.

Are they just going to learn songs?

Songs are often what make someone pick up a guitar in the first place. We love that.

But if a student only memorizes where to put their fingers for one song, the next song can feel like starting over. We use the music they care about to teach rhythm, listening, technique, and how songs work.

We teach music, not just songs. The goal is to give students tools they can use wherever their interests take them.

What if they struggle or do not want to practice?

That is a conversation, not a verdict on your kid.

Maybe the assignment was too big. Maybe the guitar is uncomfortable. Maybe they need a song they care about more. Or maybe they had a hard week and music felt like one more thing.

We want to know. A good instructor notices the win, helps with the hard part, and adjusts the next step. The student should feel Loved. Valued. Cared For. while they are learning, especially when learning gets messy.

Some of our guitar students want to play in their rooms. Some want to write songs or play with other people. They do not all need the same finish line.
