One of my favorite songs in the world is by Jimmy Eat World. You can read them below: Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head, you feel left out
Or looked down on
Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don't you worry what they tell themselves
When you're away
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright, alright
Hey, you know they're all the same
You know you're doing better on your own (on your own)
So don't buy in
Live right now
Yeah, just be yourself
It doesn't matter if it's good enough (good enough)
For someone else
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright, alright
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright, alright
Hey, don't write yourself off yet
It's only in your head, you feel left out (feel left out)
Or looked down on
Just do your best (just do your best)
Do everything you can (do everything you can)
And don't you worry what their bitter hearts (bitter hearts)
Are gonna say
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright, alright
It just takes some time
Little girl, you're in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything'll be just fine
Everything, everything'll be alright What a gift of a song. What an anthem for every person. We have all felt this deeply in some way or another. We have felt left out, we have felt looked down on, spoken about, not where we feel we should be, confused, behind, less than, you name we have all thought it. I want to focus in on the chorus of this tune. "It just takes some time" "You're in the middle of the ride". "Everythings, gonna be alright". This perspective is powerful. It extends grace. It extends hope. It extends perspective. It extends experience from that perspective. I wonder how many of us, steal the middle joy from ourselves. What I mean is, I wonder how many times, be it daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and more do we steal joy that is found in the middle of the build?
Krista and I are builders. So when progress wains or there are too many hiccups we go to a fix it mode. What did we break? Where did we drop the ball? What needs tending? What needs new thoughts and attention?
Yet sometimes, this makes us solve problems that don't exist becasue patience is left behind and what makes build successful is the ability to walk confidently in the chaos and still experience Joy.
Maybe it is just me, maybe it is just the season of life we are in but I feel a deep call for patience and presence in my day to day.
I feel this song in all of its truth to the core. Because what I want, is not what is, and what is, is not what I want.
However, the middle is where life is in abundance.
In middle is where the good stuff happens.
In the middle is where you find out who your friends are.
In the middle is where you find out who you are.
In the middle is where patience, kindness, grit, care, concern and empathy are formed.
In the middle is where your leadership is formed and tested.
In the middle is where your character is forged.
It just takes some time.
It will not be ok, if you and I run from it the middle.
But...
If we show up.
If we take steps, just one day at a time to the vision of our lives we have in our head.
If we choose to show up and be an active participant full of Grit and Grace.
If we choose consistency and empathy.
If we choose to work hard, not just on work but on ourselves with honest intention.
Everything will indeed be alright, alright.
Hardship comes to all people, none are immune.
Who we are at the end of it is far more important than who was watching inside of it.
Peace.
